How to support your pet through a move or a change at home

Boxes start appearing in the living room, furniture changes places and the house stops feeling familiar. While you organize everything with the fresh start in mind, someone is experiencing the process in a completely different way: your pet.

It doesn’t know there will soon be a new home, nor does it understand why its favorite spots are disappearing little by little. All it perceives is that the smells are changing, the routines are disrupted and what used to make it feel safe is no longer exactly where it always was.

That’s why a move, a renovation or even a major reorganization of the home can become a source of stress for many dogs and cats.

The good news is that there are ways to make this process much calmer for them.

Changes are felt emotionally too

For pets, home is not just a physical place. It’s a space full of references: familiar smells, everyday sounds, the place where they rest, where they eat and where they feel safe. When all of that changes from one moment to the next, it’s normal for different behaviors to appear.

Some pets stop eating with the same enthusiasm, others stay hidden for longer, seem more restless or start doing things they didn’t do before, such as marking territory or scratching furniture. These behaviors are not usually signs of disobedience. Often they are simply a way of showing that they are still trying to understand their new surroundings.

Preparing for the move also means preparing your pet

One of the best moments to support this process starts before moving day. If you already know a move is coming, try to keep stable the routines that can stay the same: feeding times, walks, playtime and rest.

It can also help to let your pet explore the boxes, suitcases or other objects that will start appearing at home. That way, those changes stop being completely unexpected. If possible, avoid introducing many new things at once, such as switching food or changing other important routines during those same days

The first day can make a difference

When you arrive at the new house, everything is unfamiliar to your pet.

So, before opening all the boxes, try to set up a space that feels familiar: its bed, its toys, its blanket or any object that still carries its scent. Having a safe place to return to while it explores the rest of the home usually makes adjusting much easier.

At this stage, some families choose to complement the process with Adaptación y Viajes, a flower essence designed to accompany pets through changes in routine, moves, trips or new stages, encouraging a calmer adjustment.

Learning a new home also takes patience

Even if your dog was already well trained or your cat knew the rules of the previous house perfectly, a new space means relearning many things.

Where to sleep, how to get out to the garden, which rooms it can explore or what the new limits are: all of this takes time to learn.

If during those first days behaviors such as chewing objects, scratching furniture or ignoring some cues appear, remember that they are often part of the adjustment process.

During this stage, Aprendizaje can become a support that accompanies the introduction of new routines and encourages a more harmonious life together while your pet feels safe again.

Calm is also built with small habits

Besides keeping routines, there are simple gestures that help convey calm.

Spending a few minutes playing, going for walks at the usual times, offering uninterrupted places to rest and accompanying it patiently can make a big difference.

Every positive experience helps it understand that, even if the place is different, it is still in a safe environment and not alone.

Small habits that support your pet’s wellbeing

Give it time to make that place its home

Not all pets adjust at the same pace. Some explore every corner from the first day, while others need several days or even weeks to fully regain their confidence.

What matters is not speeding up the process, but accompanying it with stable routines, plenty of observation and an environment where your pet can feel safe; little by little, that new space will stop being an unknown place and become its home.
