Why Are We Afraid of Change, and How Can We Face It?

Fear of change turns out to be more common than people think, since many of us let fear control us and never take the reins of our lives.

Fear of change is a pattern that translates into the dread produced by uncertainty, creating resistance to leaving our comfort zone, which in the end becomes a loop between not knowing how to handle change out of fear, and also not knowing what to do to stay put.

We should think of fear of change as everything negative we'll never achieve — an unfulfilled dream, an unfinished goal, something left halfway, a step backward, little knowledge, investing energy in something that won't happen — in short, a countless number of excuses and reasons to keep feeding the comfort zone.

Fear as a comfort zone

Fear can be understood as that of a person living in prison, because they're a prisoner of their own thoughts, of their freedom, of what they believe, of what they long for, but they can't get out of there because they're a person paralyzed by fear.

But if fear is there, what can we do? Fear needs to be felt and faced head-on — fear is the best teacher for learning, because if it isn't experienced, how can you know whether you're afraid of a certain action or reaction?

Fear can also be collective, since it draws in toxic family members and friends — because when you're about to develop an idea you have in your head and you tell it to the person closest to you, but instead of supporting you, that person points fingers and comes up with reasons to say “not that,” “that won't work” or “that's not the way,” by the end of each conversation you're one more victim of fear.

How to make peace with fear and accept change

There's a way to make peace with fear, and it's to stand in front of it and challenge it — within the boundaries of caring for and protecting your life, without needing to go so far as to harm or hurt yourself.

Another way to help yourself is through the guidance of nature, such as flower essences — a natural alternative that helps us understand the origin of fear and, in turn, bravely face that change waiting for you.

Time to get moving

Flower essences are transmitters of conscious movement, since the nature of each essence contributes as its surrounding environment shifts toward new possibilities. That's why flower essences connect with your inner strength and your awareness, so that you move forward using your own inner tools.

A flower essence that's especially good for helping with fear is Mimulus, since this essence lets us act when the fear has an unknown origin — in this case, the fear is related to taking a step forward, the fear of starting, or the fear of making a mistake.

Now, speaking of uncertainty, in the list of Bach flower essences, we can find Aspen, which is related to everything that scares us but that we don't know — for example, the uncertainty of new changes, doubt, or fear of what hasn't happened yet.

Siu's recommendation

Rock Water: this isn't a flower essence as such — it's an essence extracted from the vibration of pure spring water, and as its name suggests, it comes from water that's in motion, renewing nature.

The positive quality of Rock Water is to give strength through fluidity, flexibility and adaptation to change — just as water opens its own paths, this essence also brings that to the inner level of each being, to create and give life, renewing everything in its path.

Awakening awareness depends on wanting to leave the comfort zone and wanting to be the protagonist in the movie of your own life, with new scenes, new details, new challenges and new faces, which will ultimately let us break free from stagnation, helping us understand that changing means renewing and facing fear.
