While traveling with your furry friend by car, bus, or plane requires different care and processes. Here you will find what you need to know to improve the vacation experience with your little furry one.
Tips for traveling with your pet
- You should feed your furry friend at least two hours before the trip, in order to prevent dizziness and vomiting.
- Their vaccination and deworming schedule must be up to date.
- As part of their luggage, you should carry vaccination records, collar, muzzle, toys, grooming supplies, and a first aid kit.
- Do not give your pet relaxants without consulting a veterinarian.
- If your furry friend has been unwell in the days before the trip, it is recommended that you do not take them on the trip.
- For pets that are brachycephalic, such as pugs, English or French bulldogs, Pekingese, or Shar Pei, and for Persian, Himalayan, and Birman cats, it is not advisable to subject them to more than four hours of travel.
- If you travel by car, get your pet accustomed to it before the trips.
- It is always ideal that your pet travels in a crate or their collar should be secured, to prevent distractions or accidents.
- Whenever possible, make stops every 2 or 3 hours so your furry friend can rest a little, drink water, and relieve themselves.
- Make sure air circulates and avoid opening the entire window, in order to prevent any accident.
- Never leave your pet inside the car with the windows closed, especially in warm weather.
If you travel by plane...
Keep in mind the previous recommendations and add these:
- Check the airline's regulations regarding the transport of companion animals.
- If you are traveling abroad, make sure you know what the destination country requires for animal entry.
- Carry documents that certify your pet can travel in the cabin of the plane, such as: emotional certificate, training certificate, vaccination certificate, etc.
If you travel by bus...
- Check in advance the conditions that public transportation companies must meet for transporting companion animals.
- Certificates such as the emotional certificate, training certificate, and vaccination certificate are also valid for land travel.
- Animals that exceed certain dimensions must travel in the bus's cargo hold in a rigid crate that allows them to stand up or lie down comfortably.
- If they must go in the cargo hold of the bus, verify that the area is well ventilated.
- Suggest to the transportation company to make stops from time to time to check that your furry friend is doing well.
