Prepare Your Children to Enjoy Starting School

One of the most important events for children between 5 and 6 years old is starting school, and therefore, as parents or caregivers, it's our duty to accompany our little ones as they begin this new stage of life. Therefore, an initial education must begin with the parents, who will teach expressions and words associated with school, gradually familiarizing the child with school, and instilling in them the confidence and self-esteem that will form the foundation of their independence. The idea is to create an educational partnership, spending time with them on tasks such as cutting, gluing, molding, painting, etc.

Naturally, children will always be nervous about the world awaiting them, so parents or caregivers should take the child to school so they can become familiar with the facilities; so they know where their classroom will be, where the bathrooms and other spaces that make up the school are, so they lose their fear of the new space.

As parents or caregivers, organization will be essential, since children will always look to it as an example. Remember that setting some schedules will help the whole family adjust to this stage with more calm and discipline.

Education Starts at Home

It's important to remember that schools support our children's education, and the effort shouldn't fall only on their educators, since parents or caregivers must reinforce at home everything the children are learning and bringing into their lives. It's a team effort.

Your child may have already been in daycare or preschool; however, starting school is a “bigger” scenario. For this change, it's a good idea to provide your child with everything they need to feel comfortable and secure, so their adjustment to this new space goes smoothly.

Have your child use pencils, crayons, building games (legos, puzzles, chess, etc.), to stimulate the brain, while also allowing them to interact with other children in games or gatherings to help improve their social skills.

Finally, no matter how excited or scared the child may feel, starting school will still be an overwhelming event — after all, it's a new environment they'll have to experience.
