Flower essences are vibrational preparations extracted from the plant itself without harming or affecting ecosystems — an alternative, natural therapy for caring for our emotional, mental and physical health.
In previous articles we've talked about the importance of flower essences, an alternative therapy that works as a complement to treating physical illnesses, most often caused by disruptive emotional factors.
What are flower essences?
Dr. Edward Bach, a pioneer in discovering this therapy, found that wildflowers had healing properties correlated to different emotions associated with the most common human illnesses.
In his research he showed that through interaction with flowers, different feelings like anger, fear and anxiety could be treated, so he decided to take these properties and apply them to patients going through various illnesses — he even decided to test flower essences alongside patients who needed vaccines, which was a complement to help them balance quickly.
Flowers for awakening awareness of the illness.
The main function that the essence has within flower therapy is to help us first understand which part of our being is disconnected from us. Let's remember that there can also be illnesses of transpersonal origin — that is, ones we're not aware of, but that are tied to the past, the environment we grew up in, life with our parents, life at
school and our past or present relationships, among others.
In this line of thinking, what flower essences want us to understand is that behind every physical or mental illness there's an emotional origin that we must understand in order to work through it and turn the imbalance into a path of self-knowledge and personal growth.
Ways to use flower essences.
- Oral administration.
The most common use of flower essences is orally, taking a standard dose of 4 drops 4 to 6 times a day — however, dosage can vary depending on the flower system and the recommendations given by the flower therapist or psychotherapist.
- Topical administration
Flower essences can be administered topically, either directly on the area of pain or combined into creams together with flower essences like Rescue Remedy, Chamomile, Chestnut, among others. They shouldn't be used on open wounds.
- Airborne use
Flower essences travel through the air — using them with cold diffusers or misting them into the environment produces very good effects for harmonizing your favorite spaces, or wherever you or your family spend the most time.
- For daily use
Flower essences are a natural first-aid kit that not only helps with physical matters, but can also help with specific life moments like: taking an exam, giving a public presentation, personality disorders, depression, anxiety, stress, among other emotions.
According to Ricardo Orozco, a physician and flower therapist, “flowers always have something to offer in any situation, whether as a background therapy or as an aid to other therapies chosen as the main ones, and the good thing is that their compatibility with any of them is beyond question.”
A good way to self-prescribe is to ask yourself what you're feeling or for what specific situation you need them, so you can put together the most suitable flower essence for the treatment. Now, if we can't or don't know how, the best option is to see a specialist who can help treat the problem at its root.
“The semi-structured oral interview seems to be the most widespread system for prescribing essences. In some way, it requires training in interview techniques for this. Also, this approach to the patient can add an extra effect on top of that of the essences themselves,” adds Orozco.
Dosage:
Generally, Bach's guideline is followed, which is to take four (4) drops four (4) to six (6) times a day.
In acute cases, you can start by taking the same four (4) drops every five (5) minutes, until symptoms subside.
There's no such thing as an overdose, however, it's recommended to use it at most six (6) times a day, except in the acute cases described above.
