Appetite, in both dogs and cats, can go through eating problems at some point in their lives; however, the solution is not to force them, but to pay attention to their needs in order to understand what is really happening deep in their emotions.
Animals are exposed every day to different external pathogens that can cause various illnesses, affecting them both physically and emotionally. So, at Siu
Flower Essences we tell you about some of those emotional symptoms that may be behind their lack of appetite.
Anorexia
Anorexia in pets is mainly due to external causes such as fears, stress, nervous anxiety and also sudden events that are affecting their quality of life.
The anorexia that appears in animals can be similar to that in humans; however, in them the weight loss and the loss of appetite are more evident.
In this case,
flower essences work on the “emotional” nervous system of our companion animal, allowing a balance of its emotions and, in turn, improving the causes that produce the anorexia.
Our veterinarian specialized in alternative therapies Paula Mayorga recommends that, “when it comes to nervous anorexia, the point is to work on balancing the animal's emotions as quickly as possible so as to avoid some repercussions in the body from not eating; it is important to consult quickly in order to help in the recovery of the vital energy it needs to live".
Emotions at the extreme
As we mentioned earlier,
animals are not exempt from going through emotional problems, but the most common cause for them not to eat is that many of them have been through situations that lead them to push their emotions to the extreme, for example, extreme anxiety, extreme stress; because of events that repeat throughout their lives or that they keep stored in their memory.
The most common cases are due to the companion animal also going through extreme sadness, related to a recent loss, whether because it lost one of its pack or its pet parent.
The use of
flower essences in these cases is a great help and will depend on what we observe in them; for example, we can use the Wild Rose flower to motivate them to return to their normal routine, Gorse, which will help us open the appetite, Gentian to give them encouragement.
Animals looking for attention
Another reason why the animal may stop eating is to get attention; owners can unconsciously lead animals to show behaviors such as eating outside the bowl, not eating if they are not present, or something in their environment that the animal gets used to and cannot eat without it happening.
For this case, with
flower essences, we can help with this behavior using different qualities of flowers, for example: Walnut to help them adapt more easily to changes, Chicory for detachment, Chestnut Bud to correct bad habits.
Surgical situations
It is common for animals to stop eating after going through a surgical process, because of the pain and all the physical trauma that follows the event, this being the main factor why their appetite has decreased.
Likewise, it depends on how invasive the surgery is to recommend what the right food should be. In the case of
flower essences we can use the Star of Bethlehem flower, which helps us with both physical and emotional trauma and helps with healing, Self-Heal, which helps us increase the absorption of nutrients, and Elm to help with inflammation.
Other Causes
Other causes for the animal to stop eating are because it gets bored with the same food it normally eats and, although that food covers its nutritional needs, it may not cover those of its palate; also, when the animal eats other, more homemade foods, it will prefer them over kibble. It is also important to mention that any illnesses they may be presenting should be ruled out, and that this is why they don't eat.
